Activity-Based learning
Activity-based learning is central to many of the projects underway in CASTeL at present, with an aim to improve student learning. Examples include project- and problem-based learning, peer-assisted learning, and laboratory-based work. All of these strategies focus on increasing the engagement of the participants with the content.
Current projects include:
- Problem-based learning in Chemistry (Odilla Finlayson), Biology (Michael Parkinson), Physics (Paul van Kampen, Eilish McLoughlin, Martin Henry).
- Improving learning through investigative laboratory learning in Physics (Paul van Kampen) and Chemistry (Odilla Finlayson, Paraic James)
- Tutorials in Introductory Physics Concepts (Eilish McLoughlin)
- Multidisciplinary Science syllabus for first year science students (Odilla Finlayson, Eilish McLoughlin, Michael Parkinson)
- Developing contemporary conceptions of the Nature of Science amongst primary school children (Clíona Murphy)
